“Music for everyone.” That is the teaching philosophy espoused by Carmella Thompson, owner of the Somerville School of Music located in downtown Somerville. Known to her students as “Millie,” she and partner John Harrity bring decades of experience and professionalism to the craft of teaching music.
For thirty years, Millie has offered piano lessons as a fully accredited teacher who shares her passion for music and education. With a staff of teachers who all hold degrees in their field, the Somerville School of Music provides lessons for students of all ages and ability levels. Somerville School of Music services students from a variety of backgrounds. At present, students range from ages 5 to 80, with everyone from young school-aged children to retirees attending private lessons in one of the school•s seven practice rooms.
Somerville School of Music prides itself on serving special needs students, such as those who have autism. One of the teachers on staff is an Occupational Therapist who develops lessons specifically tailored for special education. Other students include working adults who are finally pursuing their dreams and discovering music instruction as a great reliever of stress. At the Somerville School of Music, students attend flexibly scheduled half hour lessons for all instruments, including piano, guitar, bass guitar, woodwinds, brass, percussion, string, as well as voice. The goal of the teaching staff is for students to achieve music reading that allows them to play independently. Music lessons provide a lifelong gift that follows children into adulthood. In fact, many of the students at Somerville School of Music are second and third generation.
Recitals, held twice a year, are recorded and broadcast on the local community television station.
